I’m sure there are many of us who harbour secret dreams of being an inventor. Having your own little workshop with an abundance of strange tools and materials, and occasionally emerging with some simple but ingenious device that will save lives or make millions, preferably both. What a triumph – and what a pity so many of us (myself certainly included) never get beyond the dreaming part.

Luckily, some people do make a reality of those dreams. TIME Magazine have published a list of what they consider to be the Best Inventions of 2006. First prize, all categories, goes to YouTube – no great surprise there, although the story makes for an interesting read. But it’s once you start looking through the other winners that it gets really fascinating, and if you’re looking for a way to beat the Monday morning blues, this is it.

For example, how would you feel about a floating mattress, an alien-looking device that stays afloat with the help of some strong, repelling magnets? Or a hypo-allergenic cat that won’t make you sneeze? Perhaps you find the idea of solid espresso appealing, or like the thought of a sweater that can give you hugs?

Have a good look – if you’re a software developer, you’re also a kind of inventor. Take a moment to be inspired by other people’s ideas, and provide your brain with the opportunity to start thinking in new ways.
