During his keynote speech at the Consumer Electronics Show on Wednesday, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced the Beta release of Windows 7, the company’s new operating system.
In his speech Ballmer said, “Windows has become the language that over a billion people speak at every country and culture around the world. I believe Windows will remain at the center of people’s technology solar system.” Ballmer went on to say, “We are putting in all the right ingredients- simplicity, reliability and speed – and working hard to get it right and get it ready.”
Microsoft is hoping that Windows 7 will help many consumers forget their negative experiences with Windows Vista.
Unfortunately for Ballmer and Microsoft, the Windows 7 Beta release has already seen its share of problems.
Many of those who have downloaded the Windows 7 Beta have reported difficulties with activating the software because of problems with the product key they were issued.
Microsoft has released the following statement on the problem:
“We’ve had some reports over the last few hours where customers have been receiving errors when requesting Windows 7 Beta product keys. We can confirm that we are having trouble distributing Windows 7 Beta product keys right now. Since Windows has a grace period built in before a product key is required, please don’t hesitate to download and use the Beta without the product key”
Not exactly a very auspicious start for Windows 7.
